Finally I’ve completed my Necromunda gang, it’s only 9 minatures but bloody hell, they took forever! It’s a Van Saar gang, I liked their “Fremen” like suits and the techno skills they have. I’ve ended up with quite a bright colour scheme but what the hell, I’m rather pleased with the industrial black and yellow striping on the weapons, it’s a little thing but ties the gang together. I spent far, far too long on these, I suppose I could have painted them to a lower standard but as usual couldn’t I bring myself to. All I need to do now is to find some time to play a game with them…

I’ve started painting again after a long break, this time I started some old Epic scale Eldar I bought cheap on eBay yonks ago. I’ve been meaning to start playing Epic again (NetEpic to be precise), and I figured the first step is getting a playable force together. I’ve started with a Defender Warhost; 9 Falcons and 18 stands of Guardians.
These are the “old school” Eldar from 1990 or so, with the old style square bases. These bases proved to be a total pig, as after spray undercoating the Guardians on the sprue, they didn’t fit in the bases, until I meticulously scraped the tiny layer undercoat from the edge of their minuscule bases, which was mind-numbingly time consuming! I also forgot how fiddly painting 6mm high blokes can be! Anyway they are complete now, I’ve done them in Biel-Tan colours in honor of my old Epic force from years ago (now sadly long lost!)
I’m working on a new set of army cards for NetEpic, I’ve stared with the Eldar and will move on to the other races. These are based on the NetEpic 5.0 rule and army books. I’ll try and keep a relatively upto date version of the cards up here for people to look at.
Latest Version: 11th May 2007
NetEpic v5 – Eldar Army Cards (11-May-2007).pdf
- Support cards are now “half height” like the old Space Marine cards were
- More cards, nearly done the standard Eldar list (phew!)
- Standardized the main color bars, so that they are all purple (for Eldar), but with a slightly different style bar on each of the cards types (company, support & special)
Please let me know, any comments and feedback.
So it’s finally done, well it’s as done as it’s going to get.
This bugger took weeks, for numerous reasons; it’s big, I’ve never painted anything like it before & GW varnish is evil. The painting wasn’t too bad – lots of dry-brushing, then re-blacking the center of each ‘plate’ with black & some quick blending. Then it started to go wrong, I applied the GW Necron transfers to some parts to snazz it up, bad idea. Either I’ve got a duff set of transfers or they are all shite but I couldn’t get them to stick and the ones that did stick looked shiny and obviously like transfers. “Oh well the GW spray matt varnish will fix that”, um no – it nearly fucking ruined it. The varnish came out slightly opaque and misty (so whole the thing looks permanently dusty) and all the transfers bubbled up from the surface and went opaque. I think was was due to the humidity whilst using the varnish (see posts on usenet). Anyhow it looked fucking shite. So I scraped all the transfers off – and put it on a shelf until I could face it again. So in a attempt to finish it off I’ve painted my own runes and symbols where the transfers were. Actually these have gone a long way to redeem the thing, they disguise the rectangular patches in the varnish left by the sodding transfers, and they might not be as detailed as the GW runes etc. but I rather happy with them. Phew, this thing better be worth it on the battlefield…

Just a quick update to show off my latest Necrons, finished one of two heavy destroyers which I’m adding to my army.
I’ve continued the red theme I started on the warriors, combined with the black, brass and gold they look like they should be chaos “Necrons of Khorne” – actually I quite like that and somehow that color scheme works well with the Necrons (IMO) yet at the same time isn’t the classic Necron silver or green combo you see all the time. I’m happy with him – notice the slighty crude painted runes on the carapace – I’ve avoided using the shitty GW transfers after a recent disaster with them (the full tale of woe is here)
Update – Pictures now on flickr as Google’s picasa web is pants…

Well I’ve been busy with the paintbrush and finished the Necron Warriors I needed to complete the Necron Army I purchased (it was lacking the minimum required number of basic troops), I’m rather happy with the result. The colour scheme differs greatly from the rest of the army, but over time I’ll probably repaint the others to match mine (coz I think it looks better!)
I went to Salute 2006 Wargaming show yesterday which was brilliant. I was working on the “bring and buy” run by SELWG, there was some lovely stuff being sold (and I spent a fortune in total) but one of my main acquisitions was this 40K Necron army, complete and painted.
The color scheme is quite unusual for Necrons being mainly white but the standard of painting is very good, over time I think I’ll repaint/replace some of the units with my own, as it just bugs me playing with minis painted by someone else. Click the read more link for more piccies.
Note. I DID NOT PAINT THESE!
A couple of weeks ago I bought some Citadel miniatures. These are the first I’ve bought in about 15 years.
Perhaps it’s pining for my youth or some sort of bizarre (and early) mid-life crisis but I’ve decided to start war-gaming and RPGing again, probably got more to do with meeting a work colleague that’s into it (thanks Steve!)
I used to eat, sleep and breathe Citadel miniatures and Games Workshop games, it was all I did. It’s strange coming back to something that you were totally obsessed with for years. There’s been a lot of changes to the world of Games Workshop and Warhammer, not all of them good (some would argue none of them good, but that’s another topic altogether) but for now I’m enjoying it and remembering all the lost hours (days/weeks/months) painting figures and playing Warhammer, Space Marine, and 40K.
Here’s some of my new Eldar figures that I’ve painted up, I’ve got a bit rusty over the years but I’m fairly chuffed with my new Eldar.
