I’ve dabbled with a number of Doom source ports over the years (a source port is an updated version, since Doom’s source code was released years ago) and the best of the bunch is Doomsday (previously called jDoom). Doomsday supports full 3D acceleration, 3D models, lighting, high res textures etc. All in all it makes cranky old Doom look quite pretty… The amazing thing is Doom still plays pretty well today (unlike many of these fondly remembered retro “classics”), sure it’s not deep and tactical but it’s a blast
Check out the website and the various addon packs. Note. A full version of the original Doom or Doom 2 WAD files are required to play. Oh it also supports playing Hexen & Heretic.
I just played the first 6 levels of Doomsday. Loved it.
I played Doom2 and Hexen when they first came out. Then we used wads people wrote along with dehack files, to change the visual effects. I am a beginner using ports and have not even looked at any other web sites. If you could point me to some of the better ones for a first timer, I would appreciate it.
