I’ve created a module for Joomla that will display images from flickr. I had a hunt round the web but couldn’t find a module that did this; which was suprising as I’d guessed that lot of people would be wanting to display their flickr images on their Joomla/Mambo website. So in the end I decided to write my own!
Update I’ve updated the module and v1.1 is available for Download – this version supports group photo pools.
I’m simply using the ‘badge’ functionality that flickr provide and wrapping it into a little module with some user definable parameters.
Features:
- Display images from a specific user or the whole of flickr
- Display images that have a certain tag (e.g. ‘monkeys’)
- Display either a random selection of images or the latest addtions
- Control the number of images displayed, their size and the layout
This is my first Joomla module so let me know if you have any problems with it (leave a comment using the form below). I’m releasing it as GPL. I’ve only tested the module with Joomla 1.0.3 but as the module is pretty basic I can’t see why it won’t work with Mambo either (please let me know if you’ve used it with Mambo)
Note to users having problems
To display you own photos you need to specify your flickr “account number” in the module settings, this is NOT the same as your flickr login username. There are two ways to find out your account number:
- Easy - Use this site http://idgettr.com, enter the URL of your flickr photo page and it gives you your flickr ID
- Less Easy – If that doesn’t work; goto your flickr photo page, and use the “view source” option in your browser. (in Internet Explorer this is in the “View” menu, in Firefox simply hit ‘Ctrl+U’). Search the source for the string “id=” (without the quotes) it should be found near the top of the page, your account number is the value after the id= up to the next ‘&’ character, e.g. 65706086@N00

Ben, I have used your module with Mambo, and it works well. Thanks very much! This camel is very grateful
dear Friend,
thank you very much for your module. I used it it and I am extremely happy about it
Thanks
Prakash Michael
Awesome module, using on Joomla! and works great.
Hi Ben,
Great module! I like the way it works, but I don’t have any use for it since I don’t use Flickr. I use Gallery2 instead and host it on my own server. However, I like the way your module displays a series of thumbs which in turn, take you to the main image.
I would like to do something like this using the RSS feed (similar to flickr) generated by Gallery2. So, do you think I can modify your module to read other RSS feeds?
Thanks,
-V
Dude! This mod kiss ass! THANK YOU SO MUCH! This is EXACTLY what I needed for TonightInAustin.com. Now we can post photos of all our events without having to also upload them to our server. WHAT A GREAT TOOL TO HAVE FOR JOOMLA!
Just what I was looking for. Thanks!
If you’re into a 1.2 release, what about a square arrangement of pics, instead of just horizontal and verticle.
Hi Ben,
great Module. Can you tell me how to tweak the picture size by px in order to adjust them to a fixed-width table? Thumbnail is to small while medium is to large. Is there any place where I can set, say, medium to “100 px max width” or so?
thx in advance and merry christmas,
M.
Hi Ben,
Found my flikr id fine…but the plugin just goes to everybody’s site on flikr.
How to fix.
Thanks
M
Hello,
If I want “Specific User (Tag) and that I inform Tag, that does not go.
One idea ?
Thanks
Thanks for this module. Worked out of the box on my Joomla-Site.
Nice module.
It doesn’t seem to work for groups with very few pics, but otherwise its just great.
Thank you.
Previously I reported that the this module does not work for groups — I have found that if I use idgetty.com and enter the URL for the group, I’ll get the group’s id. Using that id, I can successfully get pics from the group. But only using the Group Pool (ALL) source. If I try and enter a tag, no pics are returned.
Also, I am finding that the random setting is not very random. Anyway to fix that?
So far – this is the best module for displaying Flickr images. Thanks!
Thanks a lot for this module.
It is the easiest to configure by far, and it does its job as you say.
Thanks so much for this mod, works a treat!
Have been trying to use flickr4j with no success, your module worked first time. Simple as to understand, I like it.
Regards,
Hamish
Heres the kicker…I can add other peoples groups to my flickr module, but when I add my own group NOTHING will show…doesnt matter how many pics, or how many members…I tested both, and for some reason I cant get the pics from MY Group Pool to display…can someone tell me if I need to change anything in the Flickr settings? I noticed that my group does not have 12 characters but rather 10
526193@N22 – does this have something to do with it?
thanks in advance,
-Chris
EUREKA!!! All I had to do was go into the XML file and change the line that reads
param name=”flickrid” type=”text” size=”15″
to
param name=”flickrid” type=”text” size=”10″
this way it reads the 10 digit group code I was issued. I know, IM a genius…
hope this helps anyone having the same problem as me!
-Chris
Great module! I want to open it in an new window, someone knowing how to do that?
Many thanks in advance!
Thanks for the module!
Is there a twaek to the PHP file which would give me a layout of 2 columns of Flickr images? IM trying to get a 2 x 3 or 2 x 2 layout of images.
cheers again
Cam
hello Ben,
Your module is the only one I could have to work.
Thanks a lot
Serge
well, I installed it, added my Flickr ID – it started displaying random pictures from random users – I went back to edit it and……………it isn’t there! I can uninstall or install the module, but I can no longer find anywhere to edit the dang thing! It has somehow slipped through the cracks. Joomla 1.5
Hey all! This module works!!
At first even i couldnt get it to display my photos , but photos from other flickr users were being displayed…Then I realised that the Photo settings in Flickr need to be ‘public’.
Just putting this info out there, in case others r missing it…
Also is there anyway this module can be published as an article??…
Thanks for the module!
Hi, thanks for the module!
Is easy to set up and works fine.
Is it possible to have the flash version displayed as well?
Thanks and regards, Rene
Brilliant. Worked straight out of the box on Joomla 1.5 in legacy model. Thanks!
Good stuff. Thanks and greetings!

Thank you so much for this module!!!
The module works as stated, however when you click on one of the badges it sends you directly to Flicker. Is there a modification that can be made to the javascript to have it open in a new window, such as target=”_blank” ?
I have uploaded the module and populated the field with my ID, but it’s still pulling from the default flickr ID. Any fix?
As posted before the target=”_blank” would be really nice.
Other than that, everything works great. Thanks for the module.
This module is absolutely outstanding! Works flawlessly in 1.5. THANK YOU!
I’ll echo others in saying that this works just fine in Joomla 1.5 with legacy mode. It’s a neat little module.
The ability to open Flickr in a new window would be a useful addition though.

Works good in mambo 4.5.2 (i know…)
i also wanted the photos in a grid, and did it with the magic of CSS. set your Layout to “vertical” and in your template CSS add
#flickr_badge_uber_wrapper tr {
display: inline;
}
I installed the module, I’m using Joomla version 1.0.15 – added my user id to the settings but all that displays is the link to http://www.flickr.com. Is it meant to work with that version? If so what am I doing wrong?
I meant my account number not user id as specified in the instructions
After I figured out you need to upload your .zip file via the “Installers” tab in Mambo Administrator, it works great! Thanks!
