This is plugin I wrote for the Widget Sidebar in Wordpress. It will display your flickr photos in your blog’s sidebar.
It’s basically a wrapper round the badge functionality that flickr provide and publish. I’ve ported this from the Joomla module I wrote ages ago, it took no time at all and it’s working fine (see over on the right – my sad photos) – let me know if you run into any problems using it.
Download
Download the plugin here – Flickr Widget Plugin v1.0
Update
Dec 2007 – I’m no longer supporting or updating this code. I no longer use flickr, I’m no longer working with Wordpress and I have far too many other demands on my time. However by all means feel free to download and use my widget but I will not be able to help with any problems or deal with any feature requests. Sorry! The code is there for you to tweak/change etc if you want to.
Requirements
Wordpress 2.x or higher – http://wordpress.org/ (it might work on older versions but I’ve not tested it)
Sidebar Widgets Plugin – http://automattic.com/code/widgets/
Please install this plugin and get it working before installing mine.
Installation
Download and extract the flickr-widget.php file into your wp-content/plugins/widgets/ directory
Goto your wordpress admin pages and click on ‘Plugins’ activate the plugin called “Flickr Badge Widget”
Configuration
Goto your wordpress admin page and click on ‘Presentation’ then ‘Sidebar Widgets’
Drag the widget called “Flickr Badge” to your sidebar.
Click the square icon next to the widget to open the config screen.
The following options are available
| Widget Title: | The title that will appear in the sidebar, optional |
| Source: | Where to pick the photos from; can be a specific user, a group pool or all of flickr (everyone). Most people will select the “User” option to show their own photos |
| Flickr ID: | If showing photos from a user or group enter the ID here, Use http://idgettr.com/ to find your ID as it’s a bit hard to find by yourself. Note. This is NOT your flickr username, entering your username will not work. The ID will look something like 65706086%40N00 but don’t use that ID as it’s mine! |
| Tag: | Use this if the selected source is (Tag) to only show photos with this tag |
| Photo Count: | Number of photos to show |
| Layout: | Layout orientation of the photos |
| Which Photos: | How to select the photos to display; either randomly or the newest photos |
| Photo Size: | Size of the photos displayed in the sidebar |
| Alignment: | Alignment of the section (div) containing the photos |

Awesome plugin! Anyway I can add a custom size for the photos to appear or does it only offer what flickr allows you to use? I’d like to make a size that is between thumbnail and medium. Thanks!

What did I do wrong?
[...] Once again the Matter is Pimping Your Blog! I have implemented 2 new plugins and removed an older one which I found was putting some massive strain on my database. So I got rid of the suspect Exec-PHP script and added some new eye candy. On the top right you can obviously see the new Random Sportshot applet which will load random images pulled from my Flickr account. This replaces the Weekly Sportshot applet to keep it more randomized. Let me know how you like it! You can grab yours from Ben’s Website. Hi Dennis, great widget. I too am wondering if there is a way to add a custom output size for the photos? Cheers.
Ben,
Is it possible to modify the plugin to use the current category as the Flickr tag to search for?
Maybe use the Wordpress codex of “if (is_category())” and “echo single_cat_title()” to automatically adjust the tag based on the category.
The home page could default on the tag that is added in the options.
Working, but it’s calling from my entire Flickr collection, rather than the tag I put in… How to fix?
this looks like a great idea, and certainly less technical than flickrrss.
just a minor thing- wordpress.com is a hosted blogging site, wordpress.org is the software that this plugin connects to.

Like Dennis, I followed the directions you posted. But I went to ‘presentations’ there was not tab that said ’side bar widgets’. I am running the latest WP and have the I Feel Dirty 1.0 theme installed. Help?
For any of you having problems and not seeing a “Sidebar Widgets” tab – this is because you haven’t installed that plugin! Please read the requirements, my plugin is a sub-plugin of the widget sidbar, get that working then install my plugin.
Thank you for the plug in BUT I have a problem

thank you for the support.
Hi I can not offer help for widget’s in general; if you have problems with the widget sidebar please contact the authors as I didn’t develop them
Thanks!
great stuff! nice coding you did here. I am testing this now. Is there a way to show the pictures (thumbnails) 2×2 – i have set the orientation to horizontal and i like to show the four latest pictures? looking forward to your input. I’m not a coder so all help is welcome.
thx in advance..
Thanks for making this widget. I was browsing some other blogs and occassionally I’d run across sites that had some photos from flickr on them and I was wondering how they did it. Now I know, and I must say it adds a nice touch to a blog.
Hi Ben,
Installed and works great when I just have it set to ‘Specific User’ when I change it to ‘Specific User (Tag)’ and put in the word ‘blog’ which is one of my tags it doesn’t work – I get a blank profile with just the ‘Flickr’ logo below.
Any ideas,
Andrew

Hi!
Nice plugin. Thanks. However, I am having precisely the same problem as mention above by Andrew. It shows nothing if I try to use “specific user (tag)” with the tag being “blog” (or anything else, for that matter). When I change it back to just “specific user,” this seems to work fine. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks!
To the guys with tag problems.
Are you sure you have photos tagged in flickr with the tag you enter in the config??
I’ve changed my config to only show my photos tagged with the word ‘monkey’ (and as you can see from my page – it’s working) if I enter something in there like ’speedboat’ it shows nothing as I have no photo’s tagged on flickr with the word speedboat.

Yes, first I added the tag ‘blog’ to the pictures in flickr I wanted to show up and typed ‘blog’ as the (tag) word in the plugin. When that didn’t work, I tried the word ’site’ as a tag and changed the (tag) designation in the plugin to ’site’, but that didn’t work either. My site = nathanandheather.net – right now I just have all my pictures coming up (else I would have none). Thanks!
Nate,
I have just tried it with your flickr ID and a tag of “train” it works fine, it shows one photo. It appears (from looking at your flickr page) you only have 1 photo with any tags applied.

Ben,
I tried the “train” tag and got the same results that you did. Strange. Actually I have many tags on my pictures (in all, 17 have “train” as a tag). I’m not sure what you mean when you say “It appears (from looking at your flickr page) you only have 1 photo with any tags applied.” Can you not see the other tags on my photos? Am I missing something?

Is there a way to modify Layout from Vertical/Horizontal to ‘grid’-like? Let say 2×2 or 3×3 or even 2×3? … even manually?
Hello there. Thanks for the great plugin. i got a new site, which I’m pimpimg before I get it off the ground. It revolves around a recent trip.
I can’t get the photos to display. I just openned a flickr account, do you think that may be causing the problem. My flicker account is jbhernandez.
Thanks,
Joe
Great plugin
thanks man
I’m having trouble with the user + tag feature, too. I have a bunch of images tagged with “badge” http://www.flickr.com/photos/ericholsinger/tags/badge/ but I get an empty display on my homepage.
I have the same question as Guzya… I have the Flickr Widget running at http://hellosluggo.com in the iTheme WP theme. A “grid” layout would allow for better use of the real estate, so to speak.
Thanks for the great plugin!
Thank you for a great plugin, Ben.
Like a couple of others up above, I wonder if there is a way to set a custom size?
Thanks for any help with this…:-)

Thanks for the plugin!

Hi, thatâs a cool plugin – it would be great if there was an option so that âpagesâ are also cleaned – thanks.
C’Mon Ben, give us a hint how to add âgridâ layout?
Guys, I’ve given up on flickr as I’m now using Google’s Picasa Web Albums.
If you want a square layout I suggest you go to flickr’s badge generation page (remember my widget is nothing more than a wrapper round this) here:
http://www.flickr.com/badge.gne
and create a Flash badge. Then cut ‘n’ paste the resulting HTML code into a text widget. Bingo

Nice plugin. But I have an issue.
I am trying to get pictures from a search on everyone for a two word tag but it gives me for all combos but I want exact match. I can get the result in Flickr if I use quotes but in your plugin if I do that the whole page explodes. Any workaround. Thanks.
Hi! How come the widget works perfectly fine with firefox but not with IE? when IE is used, the whole sidebar goes to the bottom.
ok have installed the flickr plugin. activated it. Go to config. If i set to user/tag..i get nothing..just the flickr link on the blog. Same for all the other settings except all, which shows me everyones picts i dont want to see
any ideas what i am doing wrong?…have checked the tags on the flickr site and they are correct.
thankyou
figured it out thanks

This seems to be broken in Wordpress 2.3. The most obvious problem is that the widget text appears above the dashboard on all pages in the wp-admin panel. Anyone else using this with 2.3 (tested on Firefox).
Works fine for me on 2.3. I do, however, have a question:
Is it possible to have more than one instance of the widget. I have two sidebars and I’d like the widget in both, with different parameters.
Can I do that, and if so, how?

By all standards i think this is a great plugin. I’ve used it on a few of my blogs although the first time setting up was a problem. I intend on using it on my online dating blog too.
How would I go to use this without the widget part?!?! I’d like to use it in the template (redoable) header, there’s space in there for 5 or 6 random pics, lust above the blog-title!
I just want you to know I ran about 5-6 so called flickr widgets and by golly! yours is by far the simplest, hassle-free one! awesome!
Easiest flickr plugin. yay.
This installed fine with WP 2.3.1 and Mac FF. My blog template is based on unsleepable 2 v0.9.1 K2 template.
Medium size images are too wide for the sidebar.
I had to disable wp-cache to configure.
I’d like to display 2 tnails per row if possible. I’ll have a peek at the CSS, maybe it’s an easy mod.

Hello,
I just install your really nice plugin and I wonder if it is possible to change the tumbnails’ size ? In fact, if I display, in my sidebar, the thumbnail, it’s to little and if I choose to display “medium”, it’s to large for my sidebar.
Where can I ajsut the size of the displayed pic ?
Many thanks in advance and bravo for your work.
Ben, thank you so much! This is exactly what I wanted for my new blog I just started on Christmas day. Wow, my Flickr shots coming up randomly in my sidebar! Thank you so much!
I have to say though…the tag sort isn’t working for me either. I tried several different tags that I know I have and it didn’t work. I’ll keep trying! If a tag is two words, do you put it in quotes like you can do in Flickr? That’s how I do my multiple word tags. I tried single word tags too and didn’t get results.
Thanks so much! This is so wonderful! I love how the medium size fits perfectly into my sidebar!
Fabulous!
