I’ve created a gadget for Google Desktop, this gadget monitors your network usage in realtime and displays the upload & download rates, along with a running total.
Download - Net Meter Google Desktop Gadget v1.6.2
Features
- Realtime view of your data upload & download speeds
- Auto adjust to the maximum speed your connection is capable of
- Supports kilobits and kilobytes (Kbps and KB/s)
- Keeps track of the total download and upload volumes
Support
Note: This requires Google Desktop to be installed, and it will only work on Windows XP or later as it uses some newer WMI classes to get the information. Gadget has been tested on XP & Vista.
If you are running XP or Vista and you still see an error about “Win32_PerfFormattedData_Tcpip_NetworkInterface” when starting the gadget then please run the following command “wmiadap /f” and remove & re-add the gadget.
Change Log
| Version | Date | Changes |
|---|---|---|
| 1.7.5 | 23-Sept-2008 | Vista compatibility fixed now works with XP systems too |
| 1.7.0 | 01-Sept-2008 | Vista compatibility added |
| 1.6.2 | 29-March-2008 | Infomation now displayed when collapsed and in caption mode |
| 1.6.1 | 29-March-2008 | Bug fix for arrows not being displayed correctly on some systems. Now use PNG images and not unicode symbols, looks prettier too |
| 1.6.0 | 27-March-2008 | Bug fix for Vista, the up & down speeds were completly wrong on Vista, should be good now |
| 1.5.0 | 16-March-2008 | Numerous fixes, allows you to specify the units, either bytes per sec or bits per sec. Improved storage of the total, now should be able to go over 4Gb. This version requires v5.7 of Google Desktop |

Why does your Net Meter show activity even when I am not doing any work?
Does your “Kbs” mean kilobits or kilobytes?
first of all, thank you for such a good tool. One of the main reason I downloaded google desktop sidebar is because of your meter.
now for some suggestions…how about changing the unit from KB to MB automatically when it gets above 1000Kbs?
Thanks lettco.
I already do that on the total, but not the real-time download/upload rate. Sounds like a good idea and easy to do, I’ll add it to the next version.
Hi,
This is a GREAT plugin. Works perfectly from what I can see, and I’ve been waiting for this since, hmmm, about Google Desktop version 1!!!
Anyway, I think something that would make this a perfect++ would be if you could change the graph to look something like “NetMeter” from http://www.metal-machine.de/readerror/ (though thanks to your plugin I’ve JUST noticed they finally updated it, taking 3 YEARS to do so).
Anyway, yours seems better
This does not work on my machine. It may be a Vista problem.
I’ve tested this on Vista and it worked for me. Please make sure you have the latest version of Google Desktop installed (5.1 or higher)
Hi,I have used Net Meter for two months, but it has something wrong today.
I see a caution:
“Failed to obtain WMI locator for Win32_PerfFormattedData_Tcpip_NetworkInterface class. This gadget only supports Windows XP or Higher”
My OS is XP SP2,but I don’t know why it still say this.
Please help me!Thanks a lot!!

I too really like this gadget and would like to say thanks for it.
And, like others, I have a suggestions … if you’re going to keep the style could you perhaps trim the excess border away? Either a border like the Google Calendar gadget or a really thin, practically not at all type border.
Reason is because I have my sidebar as thin as possible and if the borders were less then the font size would be just that little bit bigger and therefore slightly easier for me to read.
Thanks again, keep up the good work, we really appreciate it.
Hi, nice gadget, i use it mainly because i have a lmited bandwidth, about 3 GB a month.
Can you please add an option for displaying in bytes and not bits?
thanks anyway, dont know what to do without it.
Hi, I installed this yesterday and was all good over Wifi but today I am in the office and using the Wired Ethernet with nothing being registered or very little (1.46M). I also have the Concise System Info plug in which it seems has a similar look but does not provide totals and it works on Ethernet? Any help would be appreciated.

Great Device, one question, we have a couple of laptops on a wireless network at home and like to know when we’re close to our monthly 10Gb limit (before dial-up speed kicks in!) does this monitor all traffic through the router, or just send / recieve per pc? Thanks
Please help!
Like the gentleman above I also experience the same fault message:
“Failed to obtain WMI locator for Win32_PerfFormattedData_Tcpip_NetworkInterface class. This gadget only supports Windows XP or Higher”
I also use XP SP2
Any answers yet??
To those having problems despite running XP SP2. It’s possible that WMI has been disabled on your machine. Please run the following command “wmic logicaldisk list” (no quotes) it should return a list of all your disks. If it does not - then you have disabled WMI. Check that the “Windows Management Instrumentation” service is enabled and running. There are many things in the system than can be done to disable WMI, I’m not sure of all of them.
Great lil’ gadget. Thanks!
On my Vista Ultimate I have Google Desktop 5.7 but Net Meter isn’t working, WMI is enabled, but maybe the reason is that my system has more than one network device (network interface, bluetooth, modem). How can you tell Net Meter to select the correct network card ?
It works with more than one network card, all the machines I’ve tested it with have more than one network card; however I think Vista introduced different WMI classes and properties so I think this could be the problem. Until I get a machine set-up with Vista I can’t help, sorry!
Download doesn’t start:
=*=
Incorrect format for file ./languages/ru.txt on line 1.
Format is “variable name[tab]value”
=*=
I also use XP SP2 and have the following problem:
“Failed to obtain WMI locator for Win32_PerfFormattedData_Tcpip_NetworkInterface class. This gadget only supports Windows XP or Higher”
“Windows Management Instrumentation” service is enabled and running.
Any ideas?
Net meeter don’t work With Vista-spanish.
i am using Google Desktop 5.7.0712.18632-en-pb but Net Meter 1.1.0 does not show any thing. Please heml
Since most users are focused on their Internet Connection (like me) and most ISP’s charge/throttle/advertise in “bits” per second (5 megabit, 3 Megabit, etc)
I tweaked your gadget (main.js) times 8 (8 bits per byte…)
if(i.Name != “MS TCP Loopback interface”) {
down_tot += i.BytesReceivedPerSec*8;
up_tot += i.BytesSentPerSec*8;
And renamed the few “B”’s to “b”’s and it works great! Thanks for this kewl gadget. You da man!
Hi there!
Great gadget! Very handy to check activity and makes more sense than packets.
One thing I noted. When I am copying data across the network it easily goes above 1MBps, but it appears that the Total still counts it as kilobytes, because I am copying gigabytes of data and it has never gone over one gig. Maybe the download speed display calculation is used to add to the total which causes it to count it 1024 times less than it should?
But thanks a lot! Will look at the code a bit…
i nedd these
It only supports maximum 4GB Total.
Great little gadget!
A small problem introduced when I upgraded to v1.5 is that the U & D in front of the % figure is being displayed now as a rectangle character.
When I try to download net meter I get “Invalid package” error.
@Rex
There is a bug in Google Desktop, this is not a problem with my gadget.
Please check you are on the latest version of Google Desktop, which is 5.7.0802.22438 I think they’ve fixed it.
As a simple workaround just download the .gg file to your hardrive and double click it.
Sometimes randomly it says “invalid package”
Try again and it will work!
Just updgraded to 1.6.1 and works a treat - thanks.
Hi Ben, thank you for the great gadget. I’m experiencing a small problem when I use a Cisco VPN client. Once disconnected from the VPN, NetMeter tries to count - now disabled - virtual VPN connection and does not count Local Area Connection (which would be preferred).
@stonx
I used to use a Cisco VPN into my workplace and I designed the gadget to cope with that.
The gadget will only collect data from active connections - in fact it’s impossible for the gadget to get data from an inactive connection as it won’t appear to it. Every second the gadget gets a list of all active connections, and loops through them getting the number of bytes from each. Once a connection is dropped it longer is there
The only problem I’ve seen with using a VPN connection is if you have the “Auto Adjust” feature enabled. When you disconnect from the VPN a “spike” of data will go through the adapter so that it reads many millions of bytes - pushing the max very, very high - far higher than it should be, so then the gadget will barely register any activity as the max is set so high.
Those of you using a VPN (not just Cisco) should be a aware of this nuance - I don’t think there is anything I can do about it. Simply let the gadget run for a while with “Auto Adjust” enabled - then disable it once it’s got nice maximums for you connection.
good software. accuracy misunderstanding though. during download, state speed on download dialog box isn’t same with net meter reading.
could i be interpreting the meter wrongly?
kindly respond ASAP.
Great job so far, especially with the totals.
But is it possible to make different counts - one for LAN transfers and one for WAN transfers? I’ve seen it done on samurize with EtheL tray, however I really need one for Google Desktop.
Great and nice job.
Please try to make the background in black color
just like many other gadgets …. i think i will looks better.
regards
I agree with Sam. I use weather gadget, analog clock (black) and CPU meter (also black). I’ve look trough the entire gadget offer, and your net meter seems to be the best of them all.
It would be great and would so go with the other ones I use, if the color (black) or the entire “look” (LED bars) would resemble to cpu meter by Keen. Great job, anyway!
Thank you for this great, and very pretty little gadget. I noticed there is the option to switch from kilobits to kilobytes which is great. It would be nice if when I switch from bits to bytes it would also do that for the totals.
Hi
I really like this gadget like all others - and I have suggestion like all others
I see the traffic being totaled which means you save only two numbers. would it be a crazy feature to keep a fully fledged log? my main advantage would be to monitor the amount of data flowing from month to month not to step over my monthly limit but it would be interesting to see weekly, daily or even hourly statistics for traffic or even speed.
is it too crazy to implement? it doesn’t have to be showing pretty 3d graphs and stuff - if we have the ability to save the log file as a .csv file all that can be done in excel…
The updates good ol’ 41 Attila wries would be gggreat…
Implementing such features is really out of scope for a gadget, logging stuff into CSV files and keeping track of totals, handling the calendar, etc. etc. the complications are numerous.
If you want such a thing then get DU Meter or PRTG
thanks for the response
I naively thought it makes no difference if you record two numbers or two numbers in every hour - I was obviously wrong.
thanks for the suggested application, I check it out
once again: congrats on Net Meter
A brilliant Gadget, every time i’m on a new computer I always end up spending ages looking though every gadget as I forget it’s name.
While I love the current version I was wondering if would be difficult to have a pause function of the limit it’s recording or to limit its recording to traffic with a single single network, as I have a download limit at home but free access elsewhere.
Not a big deal just a suggestion to improve an already brilliant gadget.
Excellent job!!..
superb look n feel..
if u cud add multiple disply option like graphs
Awesome tool neways..
gr8 job
thanks n regards
Thanks for this great gadget! It’s the best network monitor I’ve found for google desktop. I’m having some trouble with the totals feature though. I had the last version and it was fine, but I reinstalled the GD, so I ended up with this new version of the gadget, and now everytime I restart my computer, or GD, the totals wont display. I just see Total: NaNMb/NaNMb. If I click ‘reset totals’ it works fine, until the next restart. Anything I can do here?
Thanks again!
This is a really useful gadget! It appeals to my OCD nature in wanting to know everything that my computer is doing.
I like this gadget, but I think it could use a couple of changes and enhancements.
Change: The options menu only shows the input boxes for me, no visible labels. I realize it might be that I’m using classic Windows themes, and it’s a dark blue.
Enhancement: Allow picking the color for the bars and the text info on the actual gadget. On my machine the text is barely visible. It shows up as medium gray text on a lighter gray background.
Ben,
Great Gadget, however, as Attila, mentioned it would be nice to have your gadget keep a running total for day and month. Many ISP’s limit the amount of data on a given day and/or month and more and more adding this (e.g. the Comcast Monopoly). I would like to see totals that would display similar to ShaPlus Bandwidth Meter 1.1. The ShaPlus meter is accurate for XP-SP3, but the numbers are way off for Vista Home Premium, where your Gadget numbers are more accurate.
Please add in addition to
Total: (total from last manual reset, up/down)
Today: (total from midnight to current time)
This Month: (total from midnight on the first day to current day)
Thanks for listening, and hopefully implimenting these features.
For cosmetics, in addition to the aforemetioned black border, how about transparent, this will match the other widgets on my desktop.
Once again thanks for a wonderful gadget.
PLEASE!

Fix it for Vista
I practically use google desktop because of NetMeter
@Arr
The current version works fine with Vista. Please be more specific on the problem you are seeing.
If you want direct feedback from me, then please leave your email address when you comment. Thanks
Same problem that Tony here: everytime I restart, the totals go NaNMb/NaNMB until I reset them… Is there a workaround?
Thanks, great gadget!
mmm seems the proble is if you turn animation off… if you leave it on, then the totals won’t get messed everytime google desktop is closed, or the computer restarted.
I just tried to install this, after having used the old version for about a year. I’m now getting that “Win32_PerfFormattedData_Tcpip_NetworkInterface” error.. I made sure the WMI was running, which it wasn’t, it wasn’t even installed apparently, b/c when i ran the wmi list command, it said it was installing it. tried adding this widget again, same result, still getting that error. ran your wmiadap /f string.. it didn’t seem to do anything at all. But i removed the widget and readded.. and got the same error again. Any advise? I’m running XP Media Center SP2 and the latest version of Google Desktop.
I’ve got same problem…
Just tried to install this and I’m getting that “Win32_PerfFormattedData_Tcpip_NetworkInterface” error..
I run the command “wmiadap /f” and remove & re-add the gadget, but I got the some error again….
Same here:

This gadget worked until I replaced my primary hard drive and reinstalled Windows from scratch. Now I get the same TCPIP error reported here, even after following the noted instructions.
I’m getting the Win32 error too and follow the instruction given but same problem. was doing fine before after i use a new hdd and reinstall back everything then the error appear. Please help
Hi,
To everyone that have been getting errors with the gadget recently…
There was a bug in the last version (1.7.0) which caused it to be incompatible with XP
Please remove the gadget and download it again, the new version is 1.7.5
http://files.bencoleman.co.uk/blog/NetMeter.gg
Thanks!
Ben
Wow. version 1.7.5 works fine now. You da man! Ben
I have just installed version 1.7.5 but it still have WMI error, please fix this error, thank you for great gadget!
