A new Google gadget! It’s been a while but I got the urge to put a new gadget togther.
So it’s a weather gadget, oh yawn! don’t we have a tonne of those already? Isn’t the official Google gadget for weather good enough? Well yes and no. I’ve been using the official Google weather gadget for ages but I’ve recently found that it no longer works with locations in the UK! So here’s my take on a weather gadget – it’s using the Google weather API (which is used on the iGoogle personalised site). To use it you simply enter your location as a city in the options – e.g. “London, UK” or “Cupertino”.
The weather icons come for a set on deviant art by JyriK I’m using them under the Creative Commons license

I’m afraid the answer to this is going to be horribly obvious, but how do I get it to show the forecast three days into the future? I can only get it to show the weather for the current day.
In order to show the forecast, click the graphic on the left representing the weather condition.
how do I know what city the weather is showing.I”m from Toronto. Is that the weather shown?

I like the gadget! The official Google gadget doesn’t know about Cambridge for some reason. It looks hackable but I don’t quite have the skills
One enhancement request: when you resume from standby your gadget displays ?, presumably it doesn’t retain the previous weather data or thinks it’s expired. Could you fix it?
Thanks
Just added this, but it’s missing one feature…the name of the place you’re watching the weather for! I live in one place, but work in another, and then visit another on a regular basis – so I have several feeds.
This would make it perfect, and would replace my Google Weather feeds (for cities that aren’t even close to me..!).
Cheers!
I like the weather gadget better than the standard Google gadget, but there’s one thing I’d like to see you add: I’d like to see the graphics change at night so you’re seeing the moon (or the moon behind clouds). It seems strange at night to be seeing the sun in the gadget…
I love this gadget. Like others have said it’s ability to look up locations as opposed to offering a brief dropdown like the official Google ones and it’s simplicity make it stand out.
Often though, I lose the (sun etc) icon on the left for some reason. Anyone have any ideas as to why? Entering a differnt city can bring it back as does rebooting but not always.
For the poster wondering about the city name, while not perfect, you can expand it out and the location is given in the title bar of the window that slides out.
I want to use this weather gadget over others because it will show temp and humidity without expanding. However, the humidity is cropped off so I can’t see all of it. I use XP, latest SP, version 5.8 desktop.
I downloaded New Weather but it hangs on “Fetching Weather Data” with a big “?” on RHS. I also have similar trouble when I install ANY gadget that depends on an internet feed! (Yes, I have broadband connected all the time!)
Please canb someone advise me what has gone wrong.
PS: Another weather gadget also does not now get the data downloaded, as it used to. All my gadgets depending only on my computer resorces work perfectly)
Thanks.
Hi. Nice gadget, but I have a heigth problem when the temperature wraps. The wind and humidity line is cropped. How can I fix this?
Thx
Great gadget Ben, though I commented out the low/high temps to get rid of the word wrap problem. An average temp will do me fine.
much thanks, Twig.
I have changed my igoogle weather city but the weather gadget city did not change. How do I change it?
A couple of questions about the gadget.
Firstly, it doesn’t display the name of the city in the docked form, meaning that you can’t meaningfully have more than one of such gadgets in the dock. Is there a possibility to have city name display in the future?
Secondly, this gadget is included in the “Configure Gadgets” list as one with alerts. I can’t seem to find any info on what kind of alterts these are and when they are produced. Any help?
Of all the weather gadgets I’ve tried, this one comes closest. If only I could change the font, or expand the box so that I could read all of the info. The Temperature range in Fahrenheit wraps, pushing the wind speed and humidity off the bottom edge.
Wind Speed is shown, almost always, as 0 mph. If it is really windy, might show 5 mph. Possibly a weather service data issue?
its ok but missing quite a few symbols, shows the sun when its night time, not sure if its showing the right data for the city, wind speeds tend to be zero more often than not.hope this gets sorted.
The gadget working great, but doesn’t seem to find the .pngs, there’s a cross instead in the forecasts. It’s a pity. Any remedies?
still missing some icons for certain weather conditions eg light rain and others, and sun when night time.any chance this is going to get looked at?do these comments get read by the developer?be good to see it working fully would then be a great little gadget
Yes these comments do get looked at by the developer (me).
I develop all my gadgets in my *free time*, this is not my job, and very often I might not get a chance to work on them for weeks, sometimes even months.
I’ve released a new version of the gadget a few days ago (v1.1.1) this will fix the problems with missing icons.
As for the other features … I maybe will implement them at some point. But I’ve never been a fan of apps that don’t display the sun at night time
Thanks for looking into it but just to let you know am still missing some icons on the main display e.g light rain(maybe others)forecast ok.the sun comment was to infer a moon would be more appropriate thanks
Hi,
I’ve fixed the problem with “Light Rain” the issue is actually a problem with Google IMO.
When the condition says “Light Rain” the icon they specify is “mist” very odd!
Anyhow, please remove the gadget and re-download it, it should be OK now
Hello, been using this gadget since several months, and have had no big troubles at all, but now after reinstalling windows and everything, is not possible to install this gadget again (which is the only google desktop gadget that shows the city where i live!). When installing prompts an error alert: “Invalid gadget package”. Is there any problem?, how can I install it and use it as I was using it before?. Thanks
I’m not having any luck installing your gadget. It downloada and unzips, but I see no .exe file or anyother way to actually install it.
Hi, nice gadget. My request/suggestion: being a typically confused UK user it would be great to have Celsius and mph at the same time.
I like the widget a lot, it works so much better than Google’s native one. One problem though: I would like to have always the 3 day forecast displayed so I click on the weather icon and the forecast appears on the RIGHT of the current conditions. It seems that I cannot move it below. I’d like to view the gadget exactly as it is shown on this page, with the current conditions on top and the forecast right below. Is there any way to do this?
