Another gadget for the Google Desktop, this one brings your Outlook tasks onto your desktop. You can interact with your tasks, add new ones and mark finished tasks as complete.
NOTE. Google are planning on removing the mechanism used by this gadget to communicate to Outlook. This means this gadget is no longer supported or updated by me. And in a future release of Google Desktop this gadget will stop working all together. Nothing I can do about this guys.

Change Log
| Version | Date | Changes |
|---|
| Version | Date | Changes |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5.0 | 04-April-2008 | Another big update, added; - Gadget can now show not just tasks but flagged emails (Outlook 2007 only) - Display extra line of detail under each task - Feature to not connect to Outlook automatically at startup |
| 3.0.0 | 26-March-2008 | Major version update, new features and fixes. Added more sorting options. You can now specify the Outlook Tasks folder to use (if you have more than one) rather than the fixed default. Refresh rate is configurable. Tasks can now be filtered, the synax for the filter is rather complex but is documented here. A simple filter would be “[Status] <> 2″ (without the quotes) which will filter out all completed tasks. Requires Google Desktop 5.7 |
| 2.5.0 | 25-March-2008 | Basic sorting options added, allows the user so specify which order the tasks are shown in |
| 2.0.0 | 22-Nov-2007 | I’ve re-written the gadget from scratch, it now supports scrollbars if the number of items exceeds the height of the gadget. You can also delete more than one task by multi-selecting (via the Ctrl or Shift keys). Deletion of tasks is now done via the gadget drop down menu |

Ben,
I have to say I love your Outlook Task gadget. It works wonderful. I had a couple of questions.
1. Is there a way to set the completed tasks to drop off the list after a number of days or even immediately if I wanted?
2. Anyway to include the task category in both the sorting and even in the task list. i.e. Category – Task Subject?
3. Can I have the sure date show? Can I sort to have those with a due date at the top?
Thanks,
Jason
Would this work with OWA tasks?
Hi Ben,
Great gadget – unfortunately I have so many tasks they don’t fit vertically and they don’t seem to scroll vertically.
Is that right, or could vertical scrolling be added easily?
Thanks for making it available
cheers

Hi Ben. I am do at setting taks, but unless i am looking at it, i lose track. So for me this is the most useful google desktop gadget! I am very very happy with it, but are there any features there that i am unaware of!
THANK YOU! Ben.
Please change this so it does truncate my task discription. Thanks – love having my list close at hand.
Sorry, I meant to ask that my task description does NOT get truncated. Can this be changed?
Does this work for outlook 2007?

Great Gadget, anybady knows if there’s an identical one for Win Vista Sidebar ?

Dude! The link doesn’t work!! =(
I want to benefit from this beautiful piece of software!
Fixed the link! dunno what happened – but the downloads are working now!
How do I change priority?
You can click on the “white space” between the tick box and the task name, and it will toggle between high/none/low priority.
However I’m working on a new version of this gadget, and this is something I’ll try and make clearer in the new version
I have Outlook 2002. Gadget display tasks, and prioriy. It’s ql, but
1. Could you group uncompleted task in (late, today, future)
2. Could you add posibility to change sorting (by name/due date)
I can’t get the download to work. I tried on both IE and Firefox and the error page I get says:
Error in count.log on line 94.
./blog/OutlookTasks.gg is already defined.
Hi Ben,
This works on my desktop but not on my igoogle.com home page. It reads “Invalid Gadget package”. Any help would be appreciated.
[...] Check it out! While looking through the blogosphere we stumbled on an interesting post today. Here’s a quick excerpt [...]
Do you know if .gg files like yours can be embed in an IE instance in say a .NET form?
Thanks.
Hi i also like it. Could you implement a feature that doesn`t sort the list like it does now? Or something as: Last Task at the top?
Very good program, much better then all the other options.
Dude… Nice job. I need it sorted by priority though. Does it support that? If not, can I get a copy of the source so I can change the sort order?
Can I search my Outlook tasks with this gadget?
Thank you for the useful gadget.
There seems to be a problem with the program when a task has the character & inside the task header. It doesn’t show that task even after refresh (but you can see it in outlook).
When I had the “hidden” task writen there was another bug that when I was deleting a task it deleted one task up from the one selected.
Hi !
I would like the features named in the very first comment here too.
Additionally it would be great if the gadet could wrap the description to more then one line if it is too long to show in one line.

Hi Ben,
Thank you SO much for writing this. The old one was horrid. How do I make a donation? Can I pay you to add the ability to change the sort order? Also I am running XP x64 and the scroll bar does not show up (I am running version 2.2.0).
Thank you,
JoeBen
Thank you for making this gadget. It’s a very handy device.
However, – there’s always a “but” – to make it even better as indicted by JoeBen (http://www.bencoleman.co.uk/google-desktop-gadget-outlook-tasks/#comment-2258), I wonder if you would consider having a option to sort the list in the same way as outlook does or in some other manner so it’s in the user’s control.
Thanks again for your terrific software.
Wayne
I’m looking to move over t ogoogle desktop but it only works for me if I can find a gadget to sort tasks by category like comment #1 is looking for. Is a sort bu category option coming soon?
@kirk k
Sorting … I added this feature two versions ago.
If you look at the feature list and change log – you’ll see it.
Everyone please be aware – I am restricted in what sorting options I can offer. The Outlook API that Microsoft provide (and I use in my gadget) only permits two levels of fields for sorting and the sorting order is applied to both.
There is nothing I can do about this, it’s a Microsoft “feature”
Hi Ben,
Do you have any plans to create an outlook widget for Netvibes like the one you have created for igoogle? It’s great!
Kind regads – Mark
i only have outlook 2007, does it work too?
your gadget it’s so so so useful but…transparency?? colors??, need more “eye candy” additions. more lenguages too… great work indeed!
This is a great tool. I like to display the due date in my detail. What determines the date formatting? How can I change it?
Hi, I like your gadget! Having it work with outlook makes it easy for me to add new tasks & bring them along with me in my pda as well. However, I seem to be having problems:
1.Once I change anything in the options menu, all the tasks in the gadget’s main window disappers (the tasks still appears in outlook though). Refreshing or restarting the sidebar/computer doesn’t help. I can add new tasks, but they just don’t appear in the main gadget’s window.
2. Multi-selection of tasks via Ctrl or Shift buttons doesn’t seem to be working. I have to individually select & delete each task from the gadget window.
Are there any solutions for the above problems?
Thank you!
Thanks a lot! I love this tool as I keep forgetting deadlines that I have unless it’s staring me in the face. LOL.
Hey Ben!
I can’t wait to use your gadget but when I install it and everytime I try to do anything with it, I get the following alert:
“Failed to find Outlook on your system or failed opening the Outlook MAPI namespace.
This gadget requires Microsoft Outlook to be installed”
And immediately after that I get: “Failed to fetch tasks from Outlook. Please check your folder and filter settings”.
Also, I can see the options but I cannot click on anything.
I have MS Outlook 2003 (11.8206.8202) SP3 installed in my system (Windows XP Professional SP2).
Im really bummed cause I love the idea of using your gadget, do you have any idea what’s going on?
Thank you!!!
It’s very usefull.Thanks!
I love have tasks at hand.
How about a daily agenda gadget? Show todays or even this weeks meetings etc.
Please keep up the good work!
Thanks for the great gadget! I am trying to use this on my Google Apps Start Page. It shows the events with no problem, but I would like to edit the settings to filter only events this week. When I try to edit settings, I get the message “Failed to find Outlook on your system or failed opening the Outlook MAPI namespace. This gadget requires Microsoft Outlook to be installed.” I have Microsoft Outlook 2007 running, and the program obviously detects the program because it is pulling out the tasks. Any advice? Thanks!
I’m having the same problem as ukime and elissa getting an error code re MAPI namespace and cant make changes to the options. running outlook 2003, any ideas? Greg
Apparently, sorting by priority fails. If I put it on either sort field, the list returns blank.
I’m using:
Google Desktop 5.7.0805.16405-en-pb
Outlook 2007
Windows XP SP2
Thanks for this wonderful tool!
Doesn’t work. Keeps saying:
Failed to find Outlook on your system
or failed opening the Outlook MAPI namespace
This gadget requires Microsoft Outlook to be installed
I have Outlook 2007 installed and working
My Gadget does not work, the Oulook Task gadget. I’m running Vista, Office 2007, and the gadget fails to connect with out look. BTW, it also say I have ver. 3.5.2 yet your sight says 3.5.1 is most recent. Any ideas on how to fix this? Here is the error message:
———–
Failed to find Outlook on your system
or failed opening the Outlook MAPI namespace
This gadget requires Microsoft Outlook to be installed
Hi Ben,
I would really like to use this at work, but I need to be able to filter just work items to display. All of my work items are tagged as @Work.
So Far I’ve tried:
[Class] = ‘@Work’
[Class] = “@Work”
Class = @Work
Class = “@Work”
Etc… you get the idea. Whenever I set a filter I get the following error message:
—————————
Outlook Tasks
—————————
Failed to fetch tasks from Outlook
Please check your folder and filter settings
—————————
OK
—————————
What is the correct syntax for creating a filter?
Thanks,
-Rick
Hi Ben,
Thanks for the gadget.
Just to echo the post above, I would like to filter by uncompleted tasks so that completed ones disappear. can you tell me the correct syntax for doing so please.
Also, as other people have said, it would be great if the tasks could be sorted by category. If that’s not possible, a quick click to only show tasks in a particular category would be a good variation.
Also I have no scroll bars, either horizontal or vertical, both of which would be handy.
Ben,
I am looking for a Google Gadget that displays upcoming birthdays from outlook. Sort of like http://www.jarig.org/
Have not been able to find it and think it might be very easy for you to make as it resembles your outlook tasks gadget.
People would love it (I would anyway
)
Regards,
Jochem
I solve problem with priority sort. Patched version – http://jenyay.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/outlook-tasks-patched.gg.
Error was that field “Priority” is no. There is a field “importance”.
Thank you for developing this gadget. It works flawlessly and I really like it.
