Another gadget for Google Desktop! Yeah I seem to be doing a lot of these lately. They are fun and easy to write; and I like the challenge of seeing what is possible within the limitations of the Javascript language and the API Google provide (which is actually very good). My newest creation is a website or URL monitoring tool.

Download - Website Monitor v1.5.0
Features
- Monitor the availability of a websites or URLs
- Check your webservers and webpages are up and running; and responding
- Confirm the contents of the webpage, looking for specified text in the body of the page
- Check the performance of the page, by setting a response time threshold
The gadget checks all the URLs you define (as many as you like); each URL can have it’s own check frequency and other parameters. The gadget view shows a standard Red/Amber/Green display for each of the URLs you are monitoring. Red indicates the URL is unavailable; the webserver is down or some other error (e.g. 404) occurred, the monitor also shows red when the text check can not be found in the page. The URL monitor is shown in amber if the website responded too slowly and took longer to return than the threshold you specify. The monitor shows green if everything is OK with the website.
The text check function allows you to do some inventive stuff. You can check stock availability or order status or to “watch” other content. For example looking for the text “Available for pre-order” on an item on Amazon, lets you know when a item has been released (the monitor will go red, when that message changes to something else, i.e. it’s now available)
Anyway let me know what you think.

Very nice gadget. Have you thought about adding “short term” trending over the last 24 hours?
Small and simple - I really like it. However, is it possible to change the font to something smaller?
Thanks.
Guys I’ve uploaded a new version with the ability to specify the font size. But this new version requires the latest version of Google Desktop (5.5)
Thank for the fast update!
This is a very useful gadget. Any chance of adding a logging facility? It would be great to be able to save the ping time off to a file so we can come back later and monitor the performance of the web hosting service.
Hi
Can your tool work with a Mac
Do you have any recomendation for a Mac tool
Re
Chilly
Great gadget potentially, but I can’t get the text recognition to work. Running Netscape on a Vista system. If I put a text word in, it gives me red. If I take it out, I’m green. Meanwhile, I’m blue with frustration… Any thoughts? Thanks.
Very clever gadget. Just a thought. Any chance of providing a inverse logic function for the text search. IE stay green while the txt is not found.
I downloaded Google Desktop from desktop.google.com and installed it. Only when I try to add this gadget am I prompted with Google Desktop 5 is needed. The version I downloaded is 5.1, so I do not understand why I would get the message. Any idea? Do you still have an earlier version I can install?
I should’ve made clear above that the text word I’m putting in to test the gadget IS, in fact, on the page, but it still turns red. I’ve tried several valid words. Are there sites where text finding doesn’t work, or is Netscape-Vista an unworkable combination? Netscape does have a text finder on its menu, could it somehow be disabling yours?
It`s not work
To the people having problems….
Google seem to removed version 5.5 for Google Desktop from their download site, and replaced it with the older 5.1. My gadget requires the new 5.5 version.
I don’t know why they have done this - as soon as I find out more, I’ll let you know.
BTW - The prompt message is hardcoded by Google - if I could change it, I’d say version 5.5 not version 5, to make it clearer!
Trying to download Website Monitor from http://files.bencoleman.co.uk/index.php?dir=blog/&file=WebsiteMonitor.gg
and I’ve got an Error On Page: Incorrect format for file ./languages/ru.txt on line 1. Format is “variable name[tab]value”.

and I’ve got an Error On Page: Incorrect format for file ./languages/ru.txt on line 1. Format is “variable name[tab]value”. too. What is wrong?
I used your gadget with GDS 5.5. Now I had to upgrade to 5.6 and doe a full reinstall. Now your tool no longer functions. That is… the text in the options screen has disappeared (it’s empty next to the checkboxes). And I cannot enter a new URL as every time I click in that textfield my browser is started to open the (incorrect) URL http://.
Help?

Yes there is a little bug but I found a way to pass it.
You need to put your mouse cursor on the left of the “h”
letter of the http:// and then click.
The cursor is changed from a Hand type to Arrow type.
The word http:// is now selected (blue background).
click the “End” button on you keyboard and type the URL you want !
Very nice program but i have a problem I`ve sen that you have entered an IP in the program i also want to se when my servers are down how can i enter directly the IP of the server insted of the http:// Thanks.

Guys,
There was a problem with my file hosting.
It’s fixed now. Please try again.

Ben,
Your website monitor is very nice. I would like to create a gg for my work to display progress of an internet polling program. Do you offer fee based help with gg? If so, how much do you charge?
Thanks
Tom
Wonderful gadget!! Just what I needed today and it works perfectly.
One suggestion: Can you limit the size of the gadget window to just that needed to display the items being monitored? With only two monitored URLs, there’s a lot of wasted space. Thanks much.
Can your Web Monitor gadget be used to just detect whether a web page has changed? I’m often in the position of waiting for a specifec page to be updated.
Very nice product but how can I setup to my PHP hosting site?
Nice gadget…would you know of anything along these lines to let me go to a list of websites, but also keep the session open for a set time of a few minutes or so? (An auto-surfer I guess you’d call it.) I just need to make the IT watchdogs think I’m surfing a handful of sites all day…even when I’m not here.
Would love to see it work with a service too. For example making sure mysql is responding on a specified port and maybe even a logging feature.
But I love it so far thanks.
